Unter den Werken für Blasorchester ragt Hindemiths 1951 komponierte "Symphony in Bb" durch ihre beeindruckende Kunstfertigkeit heraus. Sie ist der Army Band in Washington DC gewidmet. Besonders beliebt ist das eingängige und zugleich sehr rhythmische Duett von Kornett und Saxophon im "Andantino Grazioso". Hindemith ging es darum, "echte symphonische Musik für Blasinstrumente zu schreiben, die nichts mit der "schablonenhaften Anwendung" von "üblichen Märschen, Charakterstücken und arrangierten Opern- und Konzertwerken" zu tun haben sollte.
