With the advent of highly nonlinear fibers, the nonlinear effects in such fibers are increasingly being used for practical applications. This classic work has been fully updated to review the properties of several kinds of highly nonlinear fibers with emphasis on the microstructured and photonic-crystal fibers. This book also focuses on the nonlinear applications of such fibers. Topics covered include Raman-induced frequency shifts, solitön fission, and recent findings on optical rogue waves.
Updated coverage of intrapulse Raman scattering, soliton fission, four-wave mixing, and harmonic generation. Includes a new chapter exclusively devoted to supercontinuum generation in optical fibers. Extensive changes to reflect that a full vectorial treatment of light propagation is required in fibers with a relatively narrow core. Emphasis on refractive-index changes that accompany the Raman or Brillouin gain and inclusion of the recent work in which fibers are used to provide tunable delays.
