Concert Etude was composed as compulsory piece for the category 'Piano' at the XIV International Tchaikovsky Competition 2011 in Moscow. The subtitle 'Tchaikovsky's Etude' refers to the cause of the composition ; in addition, Shchedrin evokes Tchaikovsky's composition 'The Seasons' in a quotation-like manner. The fast tempo and almost permanent staccato of the numerous eighths demand an extremely high degree of precision of the pianist.
At the same time, the change towards the 'cantabile legatissimo' parts constitutes an exciting contrast. Instrumentation : piano
