Bats as nocturnal flying mammals have developed echolocation, an efficient means of navigating in the dark. Although the acoustic signals they emit are not audible to humans, they can be recorded and analyzed with appropriate equipment and software. The author has acquired his unique knowledge and skills over more than three decades of continuous research on bat ultrasounds. Nowadays, the former auditory approach to acoustic analysis of the ultrasonic signals is complemented by computer-assisted analysis.

The method described in this book will enable the reader to identify about 85% of bat acoustic records in Europe and to carry out assessments and in-depth surveys on bats without disturbing them.
