Bats as nocturnal flying mammals have developed echolocation, an efficient means of navigating in the dark. Although the acoustic signals they emit are not audible to humans, they can be recorded and analyzed with appropriate equipment and software. The author has acquired his unique knowledge and skills over more than three decades of continuous research on bat ultrasounds. Nowadays, the former auditory approach to acoustic analysis of the ultrasonic signals is complemented by computer-assisted analysis.

The method described in this book will enable the reader to identify about 85% of bat acoustic records in Europe and to carry out assessments and in-depth surveys on bats without disturbing them. Thirty-five of the 42 European bat species, including all of the most widespread species, are covered. In addition to the book, you can download more than 300 files online that will allow you to practice and develop your skills in identifying bats by studying their acoustic signals.

À propos de l'auteur

Biographie de Michel Barataud

Michel Barataud has spent many years of research working on bats, not only in Europe, but also in the Guianas and the Lesser Antilles. Over time, and with the help of technological progress, he has developed an efficient identification method and has disseminated his findings through many publications. As a passionate teacher, he has trained several hundred bat enthusiasts in ultrasound analysis and has motivated a vast network of naturalists.

Yves Tupinier, an expert and pioneer on bat sonar, is a life-long friend. His contribution to this book is a precious addition.
