Lottie Long brushed her long red hair under her bonnet. The stage?oa?h ride from Savanah, Georgia to Nebraska had been long and arduous, and Lottie ?ouldn't help but think her hair was a fright. The mountains of West Virginia turned her tummy and ?rossing the Mississippi River was terrifying. Lottie grew up on the seaside, and had heard the river had snakes and other ?reatures that ?ould bite her.
She had been told to prepare for ?old weather, so she'd pa?ked her winter bloomers and all the shawls she ?ould find. With a few pair of la?e gloves, Lottie knew she'd be prepared for all ?onditions.as she looked out the windows at the passing s?enery, Lottie sighed. She had so been looking forward to Christmas in Savannah with her family. That was the time Father was home from sea, and everyone would gather.
This year was supposed to have been the best holiday yet. Lottie was engaged to marry Bertrand Hollingsworth, III, and she had been envisioning their first holiday together as a married ?ouple. Unfortunately, that dream was shattered when Bertrand announ?ed he had met another woman-a northerner, no less-and was set to marry her. Lottie was heartbroken and angry, but she was also quite distressed when she heard the ?ouple planned to live in Savannah.
She ?ould get over Bertrand, she knew, but she ?ould not bear the thought of running into them at some time in town. So when Lottie saw a poster advertising for brides for honorable but lonely men out west, she had an idea. She took note of a few of the ads, then went into the store to buy some paper and a new tip for her pen.a few letters later, Lottie was on her way to meet her future husband at a small town ?alled Friendship Bend.
If Bertrand ?ould marry a Yankee from Philadelphia, she ?ould ?ertainly take a ?han?e on a homesteader named Ja?k from Nebraska. Be?oming a mail-order bride was not the future Lottie Long had predi?ted, but she was known for her tenden?y to make hasty de?isions. She preferred to think of it as an adventurous streak.as the stage?oa?h lur?hed West, the pine trees be?ame abundant; then they thinned out and soon there were few trees at all.
Pastures and prairies dotted the lands?ape as far as the eye ?ould see. There were pat?hes of snow here and there, and Lottie was enthralled. She had never seen snow before, sin?e it rarely got ?old enough in Savannah.  Lottie's traveling ?ompanions had all made the journey before, and were most interested in arriving in Nebraska. Lottie ?hatted with her seatmates, ex?ited and nervous to be traveling to a new pla?e.
