Fondée à Paris par Harold L. Humes, Peter Matthiessen et George Plimpton en 1953, The Paris Review s'est assignée une mission éditoriale simple : « Cher lecteur - écrit William Styron dans une lettre inaugurale -je pense que The Paris Review devrait accueillir différents types de personnes entre ses pages : les bons écrivains et les bons poètes, d'autres moins prononcés. Tant qu'ils sont bons. » Décennie après décennie, la revue a contribué à faire connaître les écrivains importants du moment : Adrienne Rich, de même que Beckett, Philip Roth, V.S. Naipaul, T. Coraghessan Boyle, Mona Simpson, Edward P. Jones, et Rick Moody y ont publié leurs premiers textes. En plus de mettre l'accent sur le processus créatif, les fondateurs de la revue ont trouvé une autre alternative à la critique, à savoir laisser les auteurs parler eux-mêmes de leur travail. Leurs réponses constituent certains des autoportraits les plus révélateurs de l'histoire littéraire.
