It is based on the belief that people want to be heard and understood, and that they can be connected with compassion. It helps us find solutions that meet everyone's needs. #2 Needs are resources that life requires in order to sustain itself.
They are separate from the strategies that might fulfill them. It is important to keep these two things separate when dealing with conflicts. #3 When we're not able to directly express our needs, we end up creating wars with those who are unable to understand them. When we're not able to directly express our needs, we end up making analyses of others that sound like criticism. #4 The approach to conflict resolution that I am describing requires not only that we learn to express our needs, but also that we assist others in clarifying their needs.
We can train ourselves to sense what needs might be at the root of any particular message.
