Many readers acknowledge difficulty in understanding the book of Revelation. Some avoid it altogether. Part of the problem may be a tendency among interpreters to use prophecies from other parts of the bible, especially the Old Testament, to dictate how we should read Revelation. This commentary treats Revelation as a self-contained and internally consistent work. More emphasis is placed on the natural reading of the text than on similar words and images from other sources.
Context and structure take priority over theological presuppositions about the end time. The result is a pleasant surprise. It becomes clear that John organises and develops his thoughts in a systematic way. The visions no longer appear so mysterious when read in this light. It helps us to sieve through the different interpretive approaches that have contributed to our confusion over this book. Whether or not readers agree with its conclusions, the hope is that this short commentary will help some to no longer feel intimidated by the book of Revelation but to confidently return to it over and over again to be blessed by its message.
