Liaisons explores the hardships, frustrations, failings and fortunes of two fictitious families within an isolated, sugar-growing, colonial county community in Victorian times. Besides liaisons that involve tragedy, love, sex, violence, murder, attempted rape, kidnapping and near-drowning, issues such as women's rights, social conventions, labour exploitation, predatory capitalism and racial divisions are examined in the context of their time.

Within the fictional tapestry he weaves, the challenges and tribulations of the Europeans who settled along the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast are revisited. Their interaction with the indigenous inhabitants and the Indians, who came initially as indentured labourers, extends the historical dimension Liaisons affords in understanding how our past impacts on the present.
