Navigating heaving swells in between the skeletal ruins of submerged skyscrapers, they scavenge supplies while facing off the threats of starvation, pirates, and raging ocean-spanning storms. When Lena discovers a cryptic map promising the existence of a island miraculously untouched by rising tides, fantastical hopes are sparked.
But as their perilous journey ensues, Lena grows even more fiercely protective of the frail Kai, haunted by witnessing his near-fatal birth in a raging storm eighteen long years ago.
