Peter Ackroyd is the author of the ground-breaking London: The Biography, which was a major bestseller in both hardback and paperback. He has won the Whitbread Biography Award, the Royal Society of Literature's William Heinemann Award (jointly) and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, and is the holder of a CBE for services to literature. After a double first from Cambridge and a period in America as a Mellon Fellow at Yale, he turned to journalism and writing.
His first biography was about Ezra Pound and his first novel about Oscar Wilde (winner of the Somerset Maugham Award). He went on to write biographies of T.S. Eliot, Dickens, Blake and Thomas More, as well as short books on Chaucer, Turner and Newton. His historical fiction includes Hawksmoor (Guardian Fiction Prize) and Chatterton (shortlisted for the Booker Prize). His most recent novels are the bestselling Tbe Clerkenwell Tales, the highly praised The Lambs of London and The Fall of Troy.
He has written and presented two television series for the BBC-Dickens (2002) and London (2004)-and is working on a third series about the Romantic poets. He is also the author of the influential Albion: The Origins of the English Imagination. He lives in London.
