Iran is one of the most mysterious but significant and powerful nations in the world. Years after his death, the shadow of Ayatollah Khomeini still looms over Shi'ite Islam and Iranian politics, and conservatives and radicals are contending for the soul of a revolutionary. Islamic government that has terrified the Western establishment. But times have changed. This fascinating book examines many factors that have transformed the spirit of the country : Khomeini's death and the deficiencies of his successor ; the corruption that has made Iran increasingly authoritarian ; frustration at its economic isolation ; and the revolution's failure to deliver the just realm it promised. This superbly crafted insider's account is also intensely personal, revealing the hidden hearts and minds of the Iranian people.
