This handbook represents the most complete photographic guide to the birds of the Western Palearctic ever published, with the first two volumes dedicated to the 493 species of passerines known from the region. The text offers comprehensive advice on identification, ageing, sexing and moult, and gives a detailed summary of geographical variation within the treated range. All contemporary subspecies have been independently re-assessed, and listed if found to be sufficiently distinct, with separate biometrics for all.
The handbook reflects most of the latest changes in taxonomy, and offers notes on these and on unresolved problems. Maps of unrivalled accuracy show up-to-date ranges (including subspecies) along with main migration directions. The photographic coverage aims to portray all important plumages including sexes, ages and seasonal and geographical variation. Captions discuss how to age birds using moult limits (if possible), and highlight important field characters.
Together, the fire two volumes of The Handbook of Western Palearctic Birds include more than 5000 photographs, the contributions of more than 850 outstanding bird photographers.

À propos des auteurs

Hadoram Shirihai is Israel's foremost ornithologist, and the author of books including the acclaimed Sylvia Warblers and A Complete Guide to Antarctic Wildlife. While his work, especially on tubenoses, has taken him to virtually every corner of the globe, his love of deserts and bird migrations means that he is still to be found at Eilat, the watchpoint at the head of the Red Sea that he brought to the world's attention, virtually every spring.
The scientific name of the Desert Tawny Owl (Strix hadorami), a species that has attracted his attention and research since he was a schoolboy, honours his devotion to Middle Eastern ornithology. The name Lars Svensson can truly be considered "household" among European bird-watchers. His knowledge of Western Palearctic birds, in both field and museum, is second to none, and has resulted in two best-selling works synonymous with his name : his "bible" for ringers, the Identification Guide to European Passerines, and the field guide to Western Palearctic birds species, universally known simply as the Collins Bird Guide.
During the extensive preparations for this book, his in-depth work yielded a brace of previously undescribed subspecies. He lives in southern Sweden.
